The reason MICR toner is necessary to print checks (from scratch), using a checkprinting program, is that it intensifies the magnetic properties on the OCR lines (bank routing info, etc) on the program. It's still generally accepted as the default method to use MICR toner, although most banks are supposed to be using OCR scanning instead ofthe magnetic recognition these days. MICR toner often prints darker than regular toner (you should set your printer to its lightest setting), and sometimes thicker, too.
